Kelham Island Industrial Museum was opened in 1982 to house the objects, pictures and archive material representing Sheffield’s industrial story. Located in one of the city’s oldest industrial districts, the Museum stands on a man-made island over 900 years old.
The Hawley Collection was moved to its new home in the Hawley Gallery at Kelham Island Museum in March 2010, The gallery was created over two floors in a refurbished industrial building on the Kelham Island Museum site and is a unique and comprehensive record of tool making, cutlery manufacture and silversmithing collected over 50 years by Ken Hawley, a former tool retailer in Sheffield and champion of Sheffield’s industrial heritage. (K. W. Hawley’s was a well-known shop in Sheffield originally situated on Earl Street, off the Moor, Sheffield) and sold a wide variety of hand tools and machine tools, a well worn sign in the window requested in Yorkshire dialect that customers refrained from smoking (a good 20 years before the ban became country wide) .
